The Damage of Physical Inactivity

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), are responsible for 7 out of 10 of deaths worldwide, with 85% of premature NCD deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries.

NCDs like cardiovascular disease, several cancers, type 2 diabetes, and obesity are attributed to physical inactivity. In the United States, only 25% of adults and 20% of high school students get the recommended about of physical activity. In addition, low levels of physical activity are associated with $117 billion in health care costs every year.

The Birth of DPSA

Sickness, disease, and death were woven into the fabric of my immediate family long before I was born. I fractured my L-4 in a football practice during my senior year in high school; and although I competed in a few track meets that year, my high school sports career was ended by the injury. Ultimately, my family's health history and that injury served as the inspiration for the Desmond Pugh Sports Academy.
